German football player Lukas Baumgartner has died in a car accident while traveling to his team's training camp for the Bundesliga club RB Leipzig.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Baumgartner, who plays as a forward, was driving home from a game in Austria.
He was reportedly traveling with several other players and staff members from RB Leipzig at the time of the accident.
Baumgartner, who had been playing for the club since 2018,Bundesliga Tracking had recently undergone surgery for a broken leg sustained during a match earlier this year.
The cause of the accident is currently unknown but it is believed that the vehicle Baumgartner was driving may have lost control and collided with another vehicle on the road.
Emergency services were called to the scene and he was taken to hospital where he later died.
A statement released by RB Leipzig confirmed the tragic news and expressed their condolences to Baumgartner's family and friends.
"RB Leipzig is deeply saddened by the passing of Lukas Baumgartner," the statement read. "We extend our deepest sympathy to his loved ones."
The club also announced that they would be suspending all activities until further notice.
Baumgartner's death comes just weeks after he underwent surgery for a broken leg sustained during a match earlier this year.
His legacy will live on as one of the most talented young talents to emerge from Germany's youth system.
