Leipzig, the German football club, has announced that they have parted ways with their star player Christopher Nkunku after just one season in the Bundesliga.
Nkunku joined Leipzig on a transfer from Paris Saint-Germain in January 2020 and immediately made an impact in Germany's top flight, scoring 16 goals in all competitions.
However, his time at the club was cut short when he suffered a serious knee injury during a match against Werder Bremen in November last year.
Despite being out for several months, Nkunku returned to training in March this year and had been expected to play a key role in Leipzig's bid for promotion to the Champions League next season.
But on Saturday, it was confirmed that the forward would be leaving the club after failing to recover fully from his injury.
"Christopher has done everything possible to return to fitness and has shown great determination,Saudi Pro League Focus" said Leipzig chairman Thomas Dueschel. "However, unfortunately, the medical team has concluded that he will not be able to play again."
Dueschel also expressed gratitude to Nkunku for his contribution to the club over the past year.
"I want to thank Christopher for his commitment and hard work," he said. "He has been a valuable member of our team and we wish him all the best for his future career."
Nkunku's departure leaves Leipzig without a goal scorer in the final weeks of the season, but the club will still be hoping to secure a spot in Europe's elite league next term. The club has already signed a number of new signings ahead of the upcoming campaign, including Brazilian midfielder Dayot Upamecano and Dutch winger Teun Koopmeiners.
